Meet our new CEO, Ruth.

We’re excited to announce that Birth for Humankind has a new Chief Executive Officer!

Welcome to the family, Ruth Dearnley.

Ruth has over fifteen years’ of senior leadership, strategy, advocacy and communications experience in INGOs, non-profits and business associations across the UK, Australia and southern Africa.

An active and dedicated advocate for social justice and equality, Ruth brings extensive strategic and management experience, advocacy and fundraising skills, and a specialised ability to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of purpose-driven organisations in meeting their social change outcomes.

“I am excited to join the team at Birth for Humankind. I wholeheartedly support the organisation’s mission and look forward to being a part of this amazing community of like-minded, committed and passionate people fighting for a better world for mothers and their families.

I passionately believe that everyone should have equitable access to health services. Yet women who are vulnerable, marginalised and experiencing disadvantage still face significant barriers in accessing mainstream health systems, which negatively impacts their health and wellbeing outcomes, and those of their children.

I have worked internationally for many years in developing contexts and have seen how critical it is for women to have access to quality, culturally appropriate and complementary birth support alongside the maternal health system.

My hope is that all birthing women can gain the knowledge, support, resilience and respect they need in order to make informed decisions that are in their best interests. This starts with the women Birth for Humankind directly works alongside, through our Doula Support and Education programs – and extends to women we will never meet, as we model best practice and influence change in the maternal health system more broadly.

I’m very much looking forward to building on the brilliant work that has come before me and leading Birth for Humankind through its next phase.”

We’re thrilled to have Ruth on board and can assure you she has already hit the ground running. In fact, she has already made her television debut for Birth for Humankind, interviewed by Jacinta Tynan on Sky News for Mother’s Day last weekend. Watch the interview here.
